Artist Bio

Sally Cays watercolor paintings reflect her love of intense color and strong contrasts, and express the beauty she sees in the world around her with what she calls “the luminous quality of watercolor.” Although many of her paintings are florals and still lifes, as she has grown in her art she has included wildlife, landscape, and portrait paintings; as well as award-winning, highly detailed colored pencil, ink, and charcoal drawings.

Ms. Cays is a primarily self-taught artist who has original paintings and prints of her paintings in collections both across this country and internationally. She has been represented by galleries in Washington, Oregon, and California. Her original paintings are currently featured in the Blue Whole Gallery, Sequim, Washington.

A well liked teacher, she gives about four watercolor workshops per year in Sequim and Port Angeles, and has also taught workshops at Daniel Smith in Seattle and in Silverdale. Sally previously turned one of her workshops into an online course, “Portraits of Children”, and has taught students online from as far away as Tasmania, Australia. The course is no longer available online, but she is in the process of converting her workshop “Silver and Lace” into book format which will be available in print and on kindle in the near future.

Sally’s work has been featured and has won awards in regional, national, and international exhibitions. She is a signature member of The Northwest Watercolor Society, and a juried member of Women Painters of Washington. An original watercolor “From Our Garden” is featured in the book “Splash 5 Best of Watercolor; The Glory of Color”. Three of her paintings, “Trilogy”, “Tribute”, and “Saturday Market” are included in the book “The Best of Watercolor, Splash 6; The Magic of Texture”, both books published by North Light Books.
