Artist Statement

The beaches and forests of the Pacific Northwest were Suzanne’s playground as a young child. Inspired by nature, she had the freedom to collect treasures from her childhood adventures and her love of beach class, rocks, feathers and other found objects has remained into adulthood.  As a Pacific Northwest native, her lifelong affinity for the area is evident in the natural materials that she incorporates in to her work.

Sue attributes some of the inspiration for her art to her grandparents. Both sets of grandparents lived in the High Sierras in California gold country in tiny rural towns you’ve likely never heard of. Her paternal grandfather had an antique store called the “Primrose Path.” Primrose Studios pay homage to him because her love of collecting comes from him. Her maternal grandmother would take Sue out into the wilds of Northern California on rock-hounding trips where collecting rocks exploring the wilderness were routine.

As a self-taught artist, returning to the Pacific Northwest has reconnected Sue her roots and has been the impetus for her newfound means artistic expression in the medium of Assemblage Art. Her love of antiquing, collecting & crafting provide the building blocks for her work. Often combining masculine and feminine objects into her pieces, she juxtaposes rusty tools, organic elements and textiles into her unique style of sculpture.

While Sue has no formal education in Fine Arts, she has always been creative. She is a trained musician with a Bachelor’s degree from Berklee College of Music and she worked in the Television/Film industry in Los Angeles for over 20 years as a music editor before changing careers and becoming a Realtor.  Sue is currently Licensed Real Estate Broker with Realogics Sotheby’s International Realty ~ Bainbridge Island, WA and makes her home on the Olympic Peninsula in Sequim.
