Artist Statement
I painted the Sunglower Series to convey my profound thanks for the bounty of summer joys, garden abundance and warm rich color. Paintings 1, 2, 3, 4 and 7 have been sold as of December 31st.
Sunflowers symbolize life force for me. Their exuberant color, grand size and cheerful presence evoke a smile, a good feeling. The stylized images children draw of a sun are really sun”flowers”. They radiate warmth and goodness. When Van Gogh wanted to persuade his friend Gauguin to come help him form an artist colony at Arles, he painted his famous sunflower series to decorate the walls of the room he was preparing for him. They remain among his most beloved images. I pay homage to this great artist as well as to his inspiration in my series.
I have been painting all my life and appreciate the incredible beauty of the Olympic Peninsula and this community, which is quite supportive of the arts. I hope the community will share my pleasure in the creation of this series.
