Brian Buntain

As long as he can remember gold and silver have held an inexplicable fascination for Brian. From pirate treasure in Errol Flynn movies to the chink of the silver dollars used as currency in Montana in his youth, the substance and glitter have supplied his mind with inspiration.

Brian’s passion for jewelry making began one summer about 10 years ago when he chanced to be in a bead shop in Olympia. Upon seeing the vast kaleidoscope of color and form, and noting the infinite possibilities, he thought, “Hey, I can do this!”

It started as a summertime therapy to rejuvenate the inner man following the exhaustion of nudging the academic growth of 180 eighth-graders during the school year. Not only did it prove cathartic, but making jewelry energized a creative conduit for Brian’s fertile imagination. Soon frustrated by the limitations of beading, Brian turned to the art of precious metal-smithing.

Brian’s designs are influenced by adornments from ancient, classical and non-western civilizations and cross-cultural motifs; and, being a native Puget Sounder, he draws inspiration from the extraordinary environment of the Pacific Northwest.

Preparation for his art comes from mentoring under renowned jeweler, John Machlan at Guild Hall Northwest; studies in Northwest Coast Indian art & culture with Dr. Herbert Taylor and Chief Don Lelooska; and degrees from Washington State University & Western Washington University.

If you long for personalized works of jewelry sure to dazzle the eye and fuel vivid fantasy, Brian’s creations will meet your innermost desires. Frog Hollow Design produces unique, handcrafted pieces to satisfy even the most discerning tastes. Designs are at times saucy and sometimes more traditional; combine in an enchanting fusion of textures, hues and natural materials. After retiring from 29 years in education, Brian opened a studio in his home, Frog Hollow Design.

He currently lives with his life-long partner, MaggieLynn, near Port Angeles.
