Crescent School Students Learn about Raku Firing from Blue Whole Gallery Artist

Students from Nathan Shield’s Ceramics class at Crescent School in Joyce recently had the opportunity to visit Mike Middlestead, a local artist to gain hands-on experience and insight into the unique and traditional Japanese pottery technique known as raku firing. The visit was a blend of education, inspiration, and practical learning.

Mike Middlestead, a member of the Blue Whole Gallery and known for his expertise in raku pottery, as well as his wife and Crescent School teacher Katy Middlestead welcomed the students into their studio. Mike has been creating raku pottery for several years. This form of pottery is characterized by distinctive glaze effects, and a specific low-firing process, making it an ideal learning experience for the students.
