Ceramic & Mixed Media Sculpture

All my life I have been accompanied by two constants: fear and comedy. Anxieties about most
everything there is to encounter in this world have plagued me since I was a child, but these fears
were always closely followed by an unwavering sense of humor. No matter how scared I am or
how dark the world gets, I will always find a way to laugh. In my artwork I aim to embody these
constants and bring to life not just my fears, but also the things that bring me joy.
I strive to create not just cathartic personifications of my personal fears, but characters that others
can find their own meaning in. I prefer to make figurative sculptures as the human form is
something everyone is familiar with. Any expression and gesture can be understood if performed
by the body. My figures are more often than not out of proportion, missing limbs or heads, and
the details are hazy. They’re human enough for someone to know what they’re looking at, but the
lack of is where I create interest. I want to leave people wondering and questioning with no
definitive answer. Much of horror revolves around having more questions than answers. To be
left with no explanation means someone can draw their own conclusions, and self-reflexivity
arises. Fear can be understood by all, but the experience is different for everyone.
Conversely, the other side of my art aims to make others smile. I create these sculptures as a way
of bringing balance within myself and with the hope that they brighten someone’s day, even if a
little. I am a firm believer that life is nothing without its little pleasures and objects carry a great
deal of power in that regard. These sculptures are small, simple, and most importantly silly.
