Blue Whole Gallery is delighted to welcome wildlife and nature artist Lisa Allison Blohm to our community of artists.
A Pacific Northwest native, Lisa finds endless inspiration in the natural world surrounding her. From the waters of the Salish Sea to the birds, marine mammals, flora, and wildlife of our region, her paintings reflect a deep connection to the species that share this remarkable place we call home.
But Lisa’s work goes beyond simply capturing the beauty of nature.
She is particularly drawn to species that need a voice—those that are threatened, endangered, undervalued, or whose stories are not often heard. Marine mammals and birds are among her favorite subjects, although her work also celebrates the many other plants and animals that make up the rich ecosystems of the Pacific Northwest.
For Lisa, each painting begins with a connection. Sometimes a particular animal or species captures her attention and imagination so strongly that, as she describes it, it feels as though they are saying, “Paint me next!” From there, she develops a concept that often becomes more than a portrait. Her paintings frequently have a narrative quality, capturing not only the personality of her subjects but also telling something of their story.
Lisa hopes that when someone encounters one of her paintings, they will pause and look more closely. Perhaps they will become curious. Perhaps they will learn something they didn’t know. And perhaps that connection will inspire a greater appreciation for the creatures whose lives are intertwined with our own.
Many of the species Lisa portrays face significant challenges, particularly within the Salish Sea ecosystem. Through her art, she hopes to give these animals an audience and remind us that their well-being is connected to the health of the larger ecosystem we all share.
Her paintings are bold, engaging, and filled with personality—but they also carry an important message. Lisa believes that art can help us see familiar creatures in a new way and inspire both passion and action for the natural world around us.
