CANCELLED – Learn the Art of Japanese Stab Binding with Lisa Gilbert – May 18th

Calling all creatives, book lovers, and handmade craft enthusiasts! Lisa Gilbert, who recently presented a demonstration of book arts and book binding is back with a new class.


The Blue Whole Gallery is excited to announce a special hands-on workshop led by local artist Lisa Gilbert, happening on Sunday, May 18, 2025 from 3-5:30 pm. In this class, Lisa will guide participants through the traditional technique of Japanese Stab Binding—a beautiful and functional way to bind single sheets into your very own handmade book. This technique is perfect for creating journals, sketchbooks, photo albums, or unique art books.

During this class, Lisa will teach:
• The history and significance of stab book binding
• How to prepare and align your materials
• Techniques for punching, stitching, and finishing your book
• Tips for incorporating your personal artistic flair
By the end of the workshop, you’ll walk away with a complete hand-bound book—crafted by you—and the knowledge to make many more on your own!

• Course Fee: $55/Venmo or $50/Cash. All materials provided (you are welcome to bring at least ten sheets of your own artwork to bind together)
