Blue Whole Gallery will feature the work of artists Marilyn Hiestand and Julie Hembree in an October exhibition exploring the beauty, energy and interconnectedness found in the Elements of Nature. The exhibition opens with a reception on Friday, October 2nd, from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m., at 129 W. Washington St. in Sequim.
For Hiestand, nature is a primary source of inspiration. Her work in this exhibition focuses on the shoreline and the dynamic meeting of ocean and land. She draws attention to the morning light on the waves and their movement toward shore, while also
celebrating the life and objects carried from the water onto the beach. Birds, water creatures and other animals that inhabit this ecosystem become part of the story. “This exhibit hopes to capture some of that magic,” Hiestand says.
Hembree approaches the natural world through the relationships created where environments intersect. “To me, the elements of nature are the relationships between land, shore and sea – the places where they meet, overlap and transform one another,”
she explains. Her artwork uses natural materials, color and texture to express those connections.
Together, the artists offer two complementary perspectives on the shoreline—one emphasizing the movement, activity and life found along the water’s edge, and the other exploring the relationships and transformations that occur where natural environments meet.
