January Student of the Month: Sierra Douglas

The Blue Whole Gallery is pleased to welcome Sierra Douglas as our January 2026 Student of the Month. A Port Townsend native and lifelong creator, Sierra brings a thoughtful, observant eye to her paintings, finding beauty and meaning in everyday moments that often go unnoticed.

Working primarily in acrylic and gouache, Sierra paints still life and portraits inspired by scenes from her workplace and objects she encounters in daily life. Her work is grounded in a strong sense of color and contrast—bright hues set against dark backgrounds, heightened by carefully placed highlights and shadows. “I try to paint familiar, often overlooked scenes to highlight the value in moments most people ignore in their daily lives,” she explains.

Beyond painting, Sierra enjoys exploring a wide range of creative outlets including baking, resin work, crochet, and nail art. Her dedication to her craft was recently recognized when her painting Nasturtiums received Best in Show at the 2025 Jefferson County Fair. Her artwork has also been exhibited at Elevated Ice Cream, where she has worked for several years. Currently a Running Start student at Peninsula College, Sierra will graduate in June 2026 with both her high school diploma and an Associate’s degree. She plans to continue her education in Psychology, with the goal of becoming a Child Psychologist.

We are delighted to share Sierra Douglas’s work with our gallery visitors this month and invite you to stop by the Blue Whole Gallery to experience her paintings in person during the month of January. The Blue Whole Gallery hours are 10 a.m. – 5 p.m., Monday – Saturday, and closed on Sundays in January. For more information, visit our website bluewholegallery.com or come to the gallery at 129 W.
